Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance – Fastest Production Car at Goodwood Festival of Speed

By now we all know that the McMurtry Spéirling was the fastest car at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed. However, the Spéirling was purpose built for the hill climb and isn’t a production car that you can buy.

Those looking for a fast car that they can buy were paying attention to the runs from the production cars of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, and all the other supercar makers. When all was said and done, the production supercars all got their asses kicked by a 5250 pound, 5 passenger, 4 door, electric family sedan.

With a time of 50.78 seconds, the Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance was 12th overall, but 1st among production cars that you can buy. No production sports cars from Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, or any other supercar maker was able to keep up with it. The car was 0.26 seconds quicker than the 13th place Porsche GT2 RS with Manthey Performance Kit. Think about that. A 5250 pound, 5 passenger, 4 door, family sedan beat the fastest production Porsche you can buy.

What’s the secret to the Lucid Air’s amazing performance? First, the company is headed by Peter Rawlinson. He used to the chief engineer at Lotus, so he knows how to make a car handle, even ones that weighs over 5000 pounds. Second, the weight doesn’t matter to the Air because its two electric motors push out 1050 hp, enough to send the big sedan from zero to 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds. It also has an EPA-estimated driving range of 446 miles. Lastly, the Air was driven by Ben Colins. You may know him as The Stig from the TV show Top Gear. Check it out his run in the video below.

What’s crazy about the run is it could have been even quicker. This Air Grand Touring Performance was 100% stock, including its low-rolling resistance tires. Had Lucid put some stickier tires on, the Air could have been among the top 10 finishers.

All this performance does not come cheap. The Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance has a starting price of $179,000. However, even at the price, the Air is significantly cheaper than any of the supercars on display at Goodwood.

The fastest car at Goodwood was an EV, the second fastest car at Goodwood was an EV (Porsche 718 GT4 ePerformance), and the fastest production car at Goodwood was also an EV. The message is clear. The future is electric.
