I check out a bunch of cool cars at this week’s South OC Cars and Coffee, including the all new Rivian R1S all electric SUV. This super whale weighs almost 7,000 pounds but it will go from 0 – 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds thanks to four electric motors that makes a total of 835 hp and monstrous 908 lb-ft of torque.
The R1S SUV is the second production model from Rivian, and one of a few three-row EVs, making it an appealing for families who want to go electric. The R1S takes direct aim at the Tesla Model X with a lower base price and a higher towing capacity. It shares many attributes with the Rivian R1T pickup, including the 128.9-kWh battery pack that is good for 316 miles of range.
The four motors of the R1S can act independently, allowing for true torque vectoring and the ability to do a tank turn. What’s a tank turn? Watch the video below to find out.
