You may have heard the term Fiji time. That when you tell someone you’ll be there at noon but show up at 3 pm. Then there is Elon Musk time. He said my Tesla Roadster will be available in 2020, but he really meant 2023. At the extreme end of scale we have Faraday Future time. They showed off their FF 91 way back in CES 2017 and claimed production would begin in 2018. We’re still waiting for it today.
I will save the troubled story of Faraday Future for the future because their FF 91 made a rare public appearance at South OC Cars and Coffee and literally stole the show. You would think it was some multi-million dollar supercar with the amount people around it.
The FF 91 was suppose to be Faraday’s answer to the Tesla Model X. The only problem was the Model X made production and the FF 91 didn’t. Specs wise, the FF 91 has the goods to compete. The all electric SUV has three motors making a total of 1050 hp. Enough for a mind bending 0 – 60 mph time of just 2.39 seconds. The juice comes from a massive 130 kWh battery pack, which Faraday Future claims will provide a 378 mile range on the EPA test cycle.
The FF 91 that showed up at Cars and Coffee was a “production intent” prototype. The company says production of the car will finally start in the third quarter of this year, but it’s worth noting that the company has missed claimed production dates multiple times since 2017. This latest FF 91 features a new instrument panel, front and rear consoles, and exterior lighting. There is also new exterior badging, and a new production-spec lidar assembly mounted on the roof for the autonomous driving system.
If the FF 91 does reach production by the end of this year, a six-figure price is expected, putting it head to head with the Tesla Model X Plaid. Faraday is accepting preorders, with the first model being the top of the line FF 91 Futurist Alliance. The FF 91 Futurist Alliance will cost over $200,000 and is limited to 300 units. You can preorder it with a $5,000 deposit. Just remember that Faraday Future has been taking preorders since 2017. Hopefully you will get your car sometime in the future.
