All New DeLorean Revealed – And It’s Electric!

Nearly 40 years after the movie that made it famous, the DeLorean time machine is back! DeLorean has gone back to the future, with the reveal of a new electric sports car that revives the name of one of Hollywood’s most iconic movie cars.

DeLorean will officially unveil the car, known as the Alpha5, on Tuesday May 31. However, I got some early renderings to show you what the car will look like. I must admit, it looks pretty damn cool!

Named after its founder John DeLorean, the original DeLorean Motor Company went bankrupt in the early 1980s. The company’s first and only model, the DMC-12, achieved super stardom in the Back to the Future movie franchise.

Like the DMC-12, the new DeLorean will feature top-hinged gullwing doors, which now allow access to four seats instead of two for the original DeLorean.

Unlike the old DeLorean, the new car won’t be powered by a weak V6 gas engine that required 10.5 seconds to go 0 – 60mph. Instead, it’ll be using multiple electric motors to send the car from 0 – 60mph in just 2.99 seconds and 0 – 88mph in 4.35 seconds. You’ll be able to go back to the future way faster than the old DMC-12! Top speed is 155mph and the 100 kWh battery will provide over 300 miles of range.

The Alpha5 body was penned by famous Italian design house Italdesign. It’s much bigger than its ancestor, stretching 196.6 inches long, 80.4 in wide, and 53.9 in tall. The car has a drag coefficient of only 0.23Cd, making it one of the most aerodynamic production cars ever built. DeLorean says it has outsourced production to Italy whereas the powertrain will be provided by a supplier from the UK.

Only 88 (of course!) cars will be made. At the moment, no pricing information is available but you can except it’s going to be expensive given the low production run. Tune into the DeLorean website on Tuesday to see the live reveal.
