Invading The Vancouver Alpen Club Picnic

The Vancouver Alpen Club (a club for Germans living in Vancouver) held its annual picnic last Sunday at the Scandinavian Community Centre and I decided to invade it because I heard they made a really good pork hock. While the majority of the attendees were of German descent, the club welcomes anyone who is willing to pay the $10 admission price to get into the picnic grounds.

I’ve been so used to getting into events for free that paying any admission amount, no matter how small, seemed strange. Fortunately, I didn’t have the pay anything. It’s amazing how many events you can get into for free when you show up with a prosumer level camcorder and a T-shirt that says, “I’m blogging this.” The lady at the front gate had a good laugh when I told her I was from Far East Germany.

The food at the Alpen Club picnic was really good. That pork hock was one of the best I’ve tasted and it was huge too. However, I found out that the pork hock that they serve at the club itself is twice the size. I may have to get the Dot Com Crew over there to see if Stephen Fung can finish it. If you ever wonder what goes on at an Alpen Club German picnic, this video should give you a good idea.
