Elon Musk may be the most recognizable name in the Musk family, but he’s not the only to one to have started his own company. His younger sister, Tosca Musk, has the entrepreneurial spirit as well. She is the founder of Passionflix, a $5.99 a month video streaming service targeting women who are into hot romance.
Since its launch in 2017, the service has expanded to 150 countries. The site has dozens of original movies, and a handful of TV series, as well as some more traditional licensed romance movies. The content is organized based on a “barometer of naughtiness,” indicated by a series of flame emojis that rank a movie from one to five — from “Oh So Vanilla” to “NSFW” or “Toe Curling Yumminess.”
“Most of the time people look down at romance – there is apparently something radical in having female desire as a main theme – and they don’t think that romance is intellectual enough. I think that is wrong. Romance is about validating emotions. It’s about removing shame from sexuality. It’s about uplifting stories. Nothing we do is about being a victim or women in jeopardy or the domestication of women.” – Tosca Musk
Tosca directs many of original Plassionflix movies herself. She graduated with a BFA degree in film studies from the University of British Columbia in 1997. She has over 50 producer credits and director credits, as well as a handful of writing credits dating back to 2001, according to her IMDB page.
Passionflix was started with $22 million of venture funding. Tosca Musk’s older brother, Kimbal Musk, is an investor in the company. However, Tosca has been closed lipped about whether Elon invested in Passionflix.
“It is difficult for me to answer that question,” Tosca Musk told The New York Times. “If I say that he is an investor, then everybody says, ‘Oh, she just got her brother to pay for it.’ And if I say he didn’t invest, then you all say, ‘He doesn’t support her.'”
Tosca maybe the youngest of the Musk siblings, but she’s showing the same passion and flair that has made her brother so success. Through her business ventures she’s managed to create a sizable fortune of her own. Tosca has an estimated net worth of $170 million. While that number may not even be a rounding error next to Elon’s net worth, it’s nothing to scoff at.
