Porsche has released photos and a brief Twitter video of its new 911 GT3 R race car based on the latest 992 generation platform. While all the current road-going 911s are based on the 992, Porsche is still running their race cars using the older 991 generation setup. That’s about to change.
In this short video clip, Porsche teases the sound of the new 992 generation GT3 R as it drops its jacks and rockets down the pit lane.

Porsche seems to be hinting that the naturally aspirated flat-six engine might be getting bigger. The current GT3 R runs on a 4-liter flat-six that makes 550 hp and is mated to a 6-speed sequential gearbox with mechanical limited-slip differential. It will be interesting see what the size of the new ?-liter flat six will be. No matter the final size, I expect it will be making more than the current 550 hp.
Being a race car, the GT3 R is not street legal. It’s built for Porsche racing customers and rich enthusiasts who built their own race track. The GT3 R stars at $525,000.
Porsche will be releasing a road legal version of the GT3 R call the GT3 RS. Based on early spy photos, its wing is every bit as big as the race car! I’m sure a GT3 R customer will also be ordering a GT3 RS.
