In this video, I show step-by-step how to change the 21″ uberturbine wheels on the Tesla Model Y Performance with a set of 19″ Gemini wheels from the long range Model Y.
The reason for the wheel change is I’m going on a road trip to Mammoth Mountain for ski week. The 21″ wheels on the Performance Y uses summer tires and that’s really not recommend when driving up a snow covered mountain. The 19″ Gemini wheels uses all season tires that will work in the snow and cold weather.
Another plus for switching to the Gemini wheel is they are quite a bit lighter than the big performance wheels. Tesla claims the lighter weight wheels will extend the range of the Model Y by up to 30 extra miles. They will also give a quieter and more comfortable ride.
Changing the wheels requires the following tools:
- Heavy duty car jack
- 24″ breaker bar
- 21mm wheel socket
- Torque wrench
- Optional: Tesla jacking pucks
- Optional: Impact wrench
I decided to install the aero caps on the driver side wheels and run the wheels without the caps on the passenger side. I finished the passenger side wheels using the Tesla cap and lug nut cover kit. Which look do you prefer?
